Celebrating 10 years of the Be. Leadership Programme (2011-2021)

In 2011 Minnie Baragwanath invited members of the disability community to talk about what they needed in order to fully participate in the world. Leadership and professional development were right at the top of the list and in response to that stated need the Be. Leadership programme was born.

Our early goal was to grow individual leadership capacity and a community of access leadership throughout New Zealand.

Over the first 10 years of Be. we have evolved our thinking and possibility leadership has emerged to inform our practice.

In January 2021 we celebrated something quite extraordinary - 10 years of the Be. Leadership Programme, a decade of Possibility Leadership and 150 Be. Leadership Alumni taking their leadership into the world, pushing boundaries, creating change, and working to create a better, more accessible Aotearoa New Zealand.

We announced at the Graduation of our 2020 Be. Leaders that our 2020 group will be the last to graduate from the current Be. Leadership Programme.

10 years on, and following the massive disruption of the 2020 year of Be. Leadership, it felt a fitting time to re-think how we can best support the development of leadership capacity in the access sector.

Celebrating our 2020 Be. Leaders

For the past decade we have asked our Be. Leadership programme participants to consider the question: “What leadership does the world need right now?” Little did we know, as we embarked upon the10th Be. Leadership Programme in February 2020, just how critical that question would be.

By the end of March, almost immediately following our opening programme session, COVID-19 had sideswiped the world and New Zealand was in Level 4 lockdown. We had met our 2020 Be. Leaders face-to-face only once, suddenly we could no longer come together each month as we have done in the previous nine years of Be. Leadership – what to do?!

From necessity we swiftly developed and tested a mostly online programme and in doing so we created an agile, unique community of interest and care for one another. Despite ups and downs, personal and collective challenges, and dealing with some difficult pandemic related situations, this generous group stayed together, evolved their thinking and changed their expectations. They embraced leadership in a time of global crisis.
