#18 Unique Extras

The media play a huge role in shaping our attitudes and perceptions around social issues, so DiversityWorks have created an innovative way to incorporate accessibility into our everyday lives through the media.

DiversityWorks has received a grant from the Ministry of Social Development's 'Make a Difference' fund to build an extras agency that specialises in providing disabled people as extras on television, in the hopes that this will bring awareness to the fact that 1 in 5 New Zealanders is disabled.

Philip Patston at DiversityWorks believes that "this is a more effective way to promote awareness than having disabled featured characters as it allows a diversity of people to be visible without over-emphasising the issue of disability - people just happen to be in scenes interacting in everyday settings."
