A unique job opportunity at Dans le Noir ?

20th February 2017

Dans le Noir ? guide leading dinersThere is a unique job opportunity available in the hospitality industry. Dans le Noir ? Restaurant is opening at Rydges Auckland on 24thMarch, and they are currently seeking waiting staff and guides.

Dans Le Noir ? is an international phenomenon, offering patrons a unique sensory experience, not usually experienced by the sighted, of eating in complete darkness.

Founded in 2004 in Paris, more than 1.2 million people worldwide have already embraced this phenomenon. Set to open in Auckland next month, New Zealand will become the first country in the South Pacific to offer the original dining in the dark experience.

Chanael LENOIR, Auckland-based International Business Development Manager, explains that this experience of dining in the dark allows other senses to dominate, and enables guests to completely re-evaluate their perception of taste and smell, especially for sighted patrons.

Also unique to this experience, the team behind Dans Le Noir ? predominantly employs guides and waiting staff who are blind or who have low vision. Chanael explains that this makes sense as staff who are blind or have low vision are really the most skilled at working in this environment. Chanael told us that the experience really encourages sighted people to challenge their own preconceptions about "disability". This model encourages visitors, and hopefully other employers, to consider difference as a strength, and to value diverse talent.

These values are the heart of Dans le Noir ? business model. Chanael explained that Rydges is a natural partner as they share and understand the values behind this international project, and were ready to offer an accessible and safe environment, which is essential for such an experience.

The cuisine on offer will be created by the team of Owen Rarity, the Head Chef of Rydges Auckland, who will be coached by the experts of Dans le Noir ? on how to adjust menus to this unique setting.
