Parnell Festival of Roses Welcomes All

12th October 2016

Exploring at the Parnell Rose FestivalThe Festival of Roses is taking place in Auckland’s Parnell Rose Gardens next month on Sunday 13th November. The day looks like it’ll be lots of fun, jam-packed with things for the whole family to see, do, taste, try, smell and enjoy.

Congratulations to the Waitemata Local Board who have once again gone all out to make the Rose Festival as accessible as possible! We assessed the event in 2013 when it was awarded a Gold Be. Welcome rating, and we’re delighted to see that the team have continued to work to improve accessibility. It is a perfect example of how events can be made wonderfully accessible and welcoming to our diverse communities.

This year accessibility information about the event is available on request, and the organisers will be providing full programmes and an accessibility map well in advance. Thought has been given to ensure that there is an “accessible programme” and extra accessible car parking has been provided on Gladstone Road.

The fantastic accessible programme will include the following:

Audio described tours
Audio described tours are on offer for visitors who are blind and vision impaired, including hands-on experience with the exotic creatures, a walk around the rose gardens, a heritage talk, and a tour of the festival.

You do need to register in advance for these tours which will be facilitated by the team at Audio Described Aotearoa. If you are interested, please email Nicola at

NZSL interpretation
NZSL interpreters will be onsite all day and can be booked at the Information tent onsite, where they will be based. When they are available you can use them to access most parts of the festival.

In addition, interpreters will be working at the Compost Collective talks at the Compost Collective marquee.

There will also be a Heritage Talk in NZSL, and a NZSL 'Tour of the Roses', with a schedule available at the information tent on the day. For the scheduled talks, please meet at the information tent 5mins prior to the talk.

You can find the full programme online here.
