Yellow’s New Zealand Tourism Guide Awarded Gold in a New Zealand First

Be. Accessible was founded with the vision of creating a New Zealand that is a leading tourist destination for the access citizen. We are proud to announce that we have taken a huge step in achieving this goal, by awarding the New Zealand Tourism Guide a Gold rating.

The guide, owned by Yellow, currently lists more than 12,000 New Zealand and travel sites, along with being the top 1st, 2nd, and 3rd most visited website for all things tourism related across New Zealand and works with thousands of tourism operators throughout the country to provide information about accommodation, attractions, tours, transport, maps and bookings.

Yellow's CEO Michael Boersen is a member of our Fab 50 network, championing the company's commitment to the accessibility journey.

A Gold rating is our second highest grade, after Platinum. With New Zealand's growing tourism industry and the reach of the New Zealand Tourism Guide, this is a huge step forward in enabling our beautiful country in becoming a top destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Kevin Prince, the Be. Digital Access Consultant who assessed the website has commended Yellow's commitment to accessibility.

"The New Zealand Tourism Guide takes accessibility very seriously – it is a complex site, but the team engaged enthusiastically to adapt their original design to meet the needs of access customers.

"They were able to see where the standard web designs were awkward for keyboard users or screen readers and updated their code – innovatively – to meet the needs of all users. We were particularly impressed by the way that they took a map index that only mouse users could use and made an effective keyboard interface without changing the visual appearance. They have also ensured that practical accessibility is at the heart of the content they control."

Other changes made to the website include having keyboard focus visible for low vision users, and adding captions to videos, which suit access customers and non-English speakers.
