Be. Leadership in Governance

Building a community of disabled and access leaders equipped with the skills for 21st century governance, and embedding accessibility at a strategic level in the board agenda.

Our long-held vision is for Aotearoa to become the most accessible nation in the world. In 2022 we identified the opportunity to create real economic and social impact by elevating the accessibility conversation to board level.

Quite simply -we need to see disabled and access leadership around the board table adding value to the commitment to reimagine the future; inclusive of all.

Building on our 11-year Be. Leadership programme, a pilot in 2022, and a successful 2023 intake, we offered the Be. Leadership in Governance programme again in early 2024.

Please note: we are not currently accepting applications as the 2024 programme has now commenced.

About the programme

The Be. Leadership in Governance programme will help participants to further develop skills needed for governance roles and learn how to be effective and successful board members.

This unique programme has been developed in partnership with Whaikaha (Ministry of Disabled People) and supported by the New Zealand Institute of Directors.  We are also grateful for the support of Foundation North and Te Pou.

Who is it for?

The Be. Leadership in Governance programme is designed for leaders from the disabled and access communities, who are keen to develop and enhance their governance skills or are seeking their first board role.

This programme will be most beneficial to applicants who are informed about the issues facing Aotearoa now and in the future, and have a clear vision of why they are seeking a governance role and what value/expertise they have to offer. ‍

The programme consists of:

  • A mix of in-person and online workshops
  • presentations from, and conversations with governance and leadership professionals on critical areas of board competence
  • discussions and workshops
  • Mentoring opportunities

How much does it cost?

For over a decade we have invested in the leadership development of disabled and access leaders, and we want to make it as easy and accessible as possible to apply.

We hope it will be possible to offer a programme free-of-charge again in 2025, however the future funding of the programme is not yet confirmed. We’ll have more information available later in the year.

When does it take place?

We hope to offer the programme again in 2025, however this will be dependent on funding. Please check back again in October 2024 for more information.

Please note: we are not currently accepting applications as the 2024 programme has commenced and the 2025 programme has not yet been confirmed.
